What is JBOSS?

The JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP) is a Java EE-based application server runtime platform. It enables the building, deploying, and hosting of highly transactional Java applications and services. Developed and maintained by Red Hat, JBoss EAP is a subscription-based/open-source solution.

As part of Red Hat’s Enterprise Middleware portfolio, JBoss EAP operates across platforms, making it compatible with any Java-supported operating system. Initially known as JBoss, this application server was originally developed by the eponymous company, which Red Hat acquired in 2006..

What was the challenge?

A large insurance company had invested in a JBOSS platform as part of their Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (LAMP) estate. to support a mission-critical application written by a third-party software house. The software needed to be upgraded and as a result, this cascaded down to the application stack including JBOSS and LAMP versions.

As both the Linux versions and JBOSS Versions were no longer supported there was a need to upgrade to the latest supported versions that were certified with the application.

As the systems had been stable for several years the internal skill sets to support the upgrade were not available internally and therefore the Insurance company went out into the open market to find a suitably qualified delivery partner with both JBOSS and LAMP Stack Skills.

ONQU Support was chosen as the delivery partner for both the Linux and JBOSS Upgrades.

What delivery approach was taken?

The project was delivered using an Agile project delivery methodology with a Scalable Proof of Concept (SPOC) which allowed the non production servers to be upgraded and then tested first.

The delivery approach allows for lessons to be learned during the SPOC process with issues contained and resolved quickly at a low scale. Once the upgrade had been completed the proven approach is scaled to the production rather than starting the process again. This saves significant time and resources helping to deliver the project on time and within budget.
